Heatwave Show Band operates two professional youth bands, as part of the music program of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Coachella Valley, California. Under the direction of Jim Little, the original band was formed in the fall of 2007, and at that time was dubbed the Boys & Girls Club Jazz Band.
The original group started as a part of a program by the NAMM Foundation to further enhance music at the Boys & Girls Clubs. In the early years, we were based in the La Quinta Club, but now have a home of our own, in the Pete & Edna Carlson Music Club in Palm Desert.
The original band also helped create other programs to round out what is now The Music Program of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Coachella Valley.
Today, our high intensity performance group has evolved into two distinct Heatwave Show Bands - our newest, operating in the Pacific Northwest and the original, operating in Southern California.
There is no cost to the students to participate in the bands. In addition to an annual budget from the Boys & Girls Clubs, our program has some great corporate sponsors including Warburton Music Products, Tycoon Percussion, Pete Carlson's Golf & Tennis, Gretsch Guitars, and Lee Ford Music.
For additional touring and educational budget, the bands survive solely on donations from organizations and patrons at performances.
Our music program has grown to include clinics and classes for vocals, improv, music business, arranging, sound, lighting & recording technology, with state of the art equipment from a world class staff of professional musicians and industry professionals.
The Heatwave Show Bands study, rehearse and perform a wide variety of popular music. Their repertoire includes music from 40's big band era to today's popular music - from Earth Wind & Fire to Bruno Mars - put together in a "Vegas / Nightclub" style format for as long as 3 hours in a single performance.
Our bands travel around the world and perform regularly at festivals, clubs, and private events. Past performance highlights include a 2013 East Coast trip to Walt Disney World in Orlando and recording sessions at Ocean Way Studios in Nashville. In 2014, the band toured San Francisco, Monterey and Santa Cruz and recorded in the legendary Skywalker Sound studios.
The band was honored to be voted as the second best local band in the 2014 Desert Magazine's "Best in the Valley".
More recently, our Pacific Northwest and Southern California bands joined forces in March of 2018 for a concert at the world famous Whisky A Go Go in Hollywood!
